What You Need to Know About Spinal Stenosis?

What You Need To Know About Spinal Stenosis Pain: Reddy Care Physical & Occupational Therapy: Physical Therapists

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal (the space in which the spinal cord and nerve roots are located). The narrowing may be due to bone spurs, a tumor, or an infection. When there is a blockage of the spinal canal, it can cause pain in the lower back. Spinal stenosis Mesquite can result in permanent nerve damage and disability if it is not treated promptly.

Here are the causes and symptoms of spinal stenosis.

What are the symptoms of spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a medical condition that can cause one or more of the following symptoms:

  • A feeling of tightness in your chest, shoulders, or neck.
  • Pain that worsens when you twist or move your body.
  • Pain occurs when you lie down.
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning in your hands and feet.
  • Difficulty walking up and down stairs or hills.
  • Difficulty climbing stairs.
  • Trouble breathing while lying on your back or side with your head off the bed.

What are the causes of spinal stenosis?

Wear and tear changes

There are two main types of wear and tear on the spinal canal that can cause stenosis. The first is called secondary stenosis and occurs when a previous injury to the spine has left it weakened and more susceptible to developing stenosis in the future. The second type of wear and wear, called primary stenosis, occurs when a previous injury, congenital defect, or abnormality in the spinal cord itself causes damage to the nerves.

Age-related conditions

Age-related conditions can trigger spinal stenosis, such as osteoporosis or arthritis, which can weaken bones around the spine, causing them to become brittle and more susceptible to fracturing. If pressure is applied to them during certain activities, such as walking or lifting objects heavy enough to strain them.

Arthritis

Spinal stenosis is caused by arthritis, which occurs in the spine. An injury can cause this to the spine or an infection that spreads to the spine and causes inflammation. The pain of arthritis is usually constant but often difficult to describe, and it typically worsens with activity.

Infection

Spinal stenosis is caused by infection, which can cause joint inflammation (synovitis) or underlying bone infection (osteomyelitis). When there is inflammation, you may feel pain that does not improve with rest, heat, or anti-inflammatory medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Motrin). You may also have a fever and chills.

How is spinal stenosis treated?

Treatment for spinal stenosis depends on the severity of the disease. Some treatments can relieve pain and improve nerve function. Others may help reduce pressure on your spinal cord. Some of the options available include;

Non-surgical therapies: Non-surgical therapies are often used for people with low back pain caused by spinal stenosis. These include physical therapy and medication.

Surgery: Surgery may be needed if:

-The stenosis is severe, causing leg pain or numbness

-You can’t walk or stand normally

-You need surgery soon because you have an injury or illness that makes it difficult to breathe

If you have spinal stenosis, it is essential to see your doctor. Your doctor will likely order an MRI of your spine with contrast. This test can show the extent of the narrowing and whether there are any bulges or fluid in the canal. Your doctor may also recommend that you have a CT scan of your spine (dorsal column) and brain (cerebral) to look for areas of injury or disease that may be causing spinal stenosis.
